The Biostatistics Unit work towards increasing the quality and productivity of research, and knowledge and application of modern biostatistical techniques through didactic lessons, seminars and workshops. Furthermore, the Unit conducts biostatistical methodological research and provides statistical consulting and grant preparation assistance services. The official launch of the Biostatistics Unit took place on the 6 September 2013. Researchers, post graduate students, head of Departments, Centres and Divisions, and Faculty management from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, and colleagues from main campus, South African Medical Research Council, Universities of Western Cape and Cape Town attended the event where Prof Eugene Cloete, Vice-Rector (Research & Innovation), gave a key note talk on Stellenbosch University’s Institutional Intent and Strategy 2013-2018 and Prof Jimmy Volmink, dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, spoke on Biostatistics capacity in the African region. The Biostatistics Unit is headed by Dr Rhoderick Machekano.
